How the scam works
On classifieds platforms like Kleinanzeigen or Facebook Marketplace, a scammer responds quickly to your listing or item and tries to move the chat to WhatsApp, away from the platform's protections. They then push a secure payment link, a fake courier service that needs a fee, or claim they will pay through a special process that requires you to confirm details.
The links lead to phishing pages that capture your bank or card data, or you are asked to read out a verification code that actually hands over access to one of your accounts.
Why it works and who is targeted
Private buyers and sellers want a quick, friendly deal, and scammers imitate normal, polite conversation to build trust before introducing the catch. Official-looking secure payment pages and courier branding make the fake process feel routine.
Both sides are targeted: sellers via fake payment confirmations and courier fees, buyers via items that never ship. Moving to WhatsApp matters because it removes the platform's fraud monitoring and makes you feel you are dealing directly with a real person.
Warning signs in detail
Be wary when a contact rushes to leave the platform for WhatsApp, sends you a payment or tracking link instead of using the platform's own system, or insists on an unfamiliar courier that charges you a fee first. Any request to share a verification or confirmation code sent to your phone is a serious red flag - those codes protect your accounts.
Overpayment offers, deals that are too generous, and pressure to act before someone else takes it are common in marketplace fraud.
How to protect yourself
Keep all communication and payment inside the platform, and decline to move to WhatsApp or to use any secure payment link a stranger sends you. Never share a verification code, and treat courier fees you must pay upfront as a likely scam.
For local items, cash on collection remains a safe option; for shipping, use the platform's own protected payment and shipping where available. If something feels off, stop and report the user to the platform, and contact your bank at once if you shared card or banking details.
